To: The Major of Padua
Dear Mr. Flavio Zanonato,
we, the undersigned, oppose your irresponsible decision to move one of the most loved landmarks of the city of Padua, namely the Tomb of Antenor, to make way for the new line of the tram n. 42, "Diretto piazze". (For historical informations about the monument itself, we direct readers of this petition to http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomba_di_Antenore ).
After reading the reasons of your decision, we agree with you that:
* line n.42 will greatly speed up the connection between the quarters of the city;
* with all likelihood, Antenor wasn't the real founder of the city;
* the person buried in the Tomb is, with all likelihood, not Antenor anyway;
* the momument itself will be better protected from the polluted environment by moving it indoors, to the Palazzo della Ragione hall.Nevertheless, we strongly feel that:
* the alternate route for the tram line (the so-called "Piano 42-bis") proposed by eng. V. Pollini of the University of Padua is equally efficient, requiring only a small detour around the Torre della Specola;
* the fact that Antenor was with all likelyhood only a mythological figure from Virgil's Aeneid doesn't detract from the symbolic value of Antenor's Tomb as a cultural reference - "the heart of Padua".
* senior restorer V. Piovan stated that "[...] the Tomb has withstood the elements since 1283; it can stand where it is for seven more centuries".After having read the public discussions on the matter (search the site www.mattinopadova.it for the keywords "Zanonato", "tram" or "Antenore") we feel that this petition is the best way to quantify the extent of public opposition to your plans, and we urge you to reconsider your decision and to adopt the aforementioned plan 42-bis instead.
Sincerely,
